Old Colony Memorial - Obituary Index
The Library owns microfilm copies of most editions of the local paper, the Old Colony Memorial, dating back to its founding in 1822. One of the most frequent research requests we receive is to locate individual obituaries which appeared in the newspaper. Therefore, with the help of volunteers, we have begun creating a searchable index which will allow us to determine whether or not an individual's obituary actually appeared in the Old Colony Memorial. We have two databases which are being added to on an on-going basis: a current index (from the present, now currently back to 2008) and a historical index (which at the moment includes names from approximately 1922 to 1925).
To search these records, click on "search" to access a menu which gives you the option of searching by name (including maiden name) and date of death. Note: after you have entered your search terms, click the search command below the menu to see the results. You can view and print individual records, which will include the date and page number of the obituary if it was published in the Old Colony Memorial. You can visit the library to access the obituary using one of our microfilm readers or contact us to create a copy for you.
