  • The Children's Room houses a collection chosen to meet the informational and recreational reading needs of children from infancy to sixth grade, their parents, caregivers and educators.
  • The Children's Collection consists of books, magazines, audio and videocassettes, compact discs, DVDs and learning materials. It includes a print reference collection with general as well as subject encyclopedias, atlases and dictionaries, circulating books and tapes in foreign languages, Braille books, a science projects collection, a children's classics book collection and books written by student authors.
  • A toddler collection includes board books for our youngest patrons.
  • A Primer collection includes books of varying reading levels for beginning readers.
  • Fiction for older children includes collections of mysteries and science fiction titles, as well as a Newbery Award collection and beginning chapter book collection for children in grades 2 and 3. Popular paperback series also are included.
  • Games, puzzles, and puppets are available for borrowing as well as for enjoying in the Children's Room.
  • The collection also includes five multimedia science kits funded by a Science Reference Grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, and ten multimedia backpack kits, funded by the Plymouth Community Partnerships for Children.

  • REFERENCE - A professional librarian is available at all times to answer your questions. We can help you find specific titles, guide your search for authors or subject areas, and recommend titles for recreational reading. Telephone reference also is available. Call 508-830-4250 and ask for the Youth Services Department.
  • INSTRUCTION - A professional librarian is available to instruct you in the use of public access computers and online databases.
  • HOMEWORK HELP - Our staff is ready to help with locating material for assignments and choosing books for book reports and other school projects.
  • COMPUTERS - Computers are available with a variety of activities and games for preschool and elementary-age children. An IBM computer is available for report writing.
  • PROGRAMS - Programs are offered for children ages 12 and under and their families. They include storytimes, puppet shows, concerts, and holiday events. Check out the library's events listing to find out about current happenings!
  • TEACHER SERVICES - Class visits are available by appointment. Library orientation, instruction on computer use and library resources, and book-talks on titles of interest also are available. Teachers in Plymouth schools may take advantage of extended loan periods. Exhibit space is available for class projects and student artwork.   • COMMUNITY SERVICES - A professional librarian is available to speak to your community group on topics such as motivating your child to read, current trends in children's literature, and library programs and services. Community groups are encouraged to schedule a library tour, which can include a storytime and "behind-the-scenes" look at the library. A meeting room and display and exhibit spaces also are available.
  • SERVICES FOR PARENTS & CAREGIVERS - A Parent-Teacher section of the Children's Room, located just outside the Story Room, provides comfortable seating for adults and toddlers. Here you will find the Parent-Teacher collection, bulletin boards for notices of particular interest to parents and caregivers, copies of the free publications "Parents and Kids South of Boston" and "Boston Parents' Paper," information about toddler programs and a dollhouse and puppets to enjoy while you visit.
  • BOOKLISTS - The staff develops booklists on topics of interest and maintains a vertical file of booklists available to the public. A holiday gift booklist, "Seasons Readings" is printed annually and a children's suggested summer reading list is developed annually in conjunction with media specialists from the Plymouth public schools.

  • The Parent-Teacher collection, located in the Children's Room, contains books, magazines and videos to help both adults and children deal with a wide spectrum of family issues and social situations. Subjects of interest to teachers and caregivers also are included in this collection.

  • Summer Reading List - Plymouth's elementary school media specialists and public library youth services staff have worked together to select some of the best titles from recently published children's books available at the Plymouth Public Library. View List
  • Newbery Medal Awards - The Newbery Medal was named for 18th-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. View List
  • Caldecott Medal Awards - The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of 19th-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.   • Notable Children's Books List - The Notable Children's Books list is an annual list of the books selected from the publishing of a particular calendar year. The list is intended for children to assist them in selecting books to read, to encourage them to seek out those notable among the many books available in bookstores and libraries. View List
