Downloading eBooks

How do I download eBooks?

If you have never checked out and downloaded eBooks or audio from the Plymouth Public Library before, please visit Over Drive Help to learn the basics and get any software that you may need.  Before you can transfer eBooks to your devices, you must download software to your personal computer or tablet. Borrowing eBooks and downloadables requires the installation of software that associates the loan with your computer or other device.   Those software files need to be accessed through the Over Drive Media Console.  Kindle users do not need to download any additional software, but to check out ePub books (for Nooks and other devices), you will also need to download and install Adobe Digital Editions. This software is available at the OverDrive site.

Once you have completed these steps, you are ready to browse and download titles.

Click the “Download eBooks” link on the library home page  to access the Over Drive catalogue (or from here, use the icon to your right).  Click on the My eAccount link to sign in using your library card number and PIN.  (Signing in will allow you to view titles which Plymouth has purchased in addition to those generally available in the Old Colony Library Network).  Click on “Search” to browse the collection.  Our collection includes many popular fiction and non-fiction titles for readers of all ages.  Books can be downloaded and read on many devices, including Kindles, Nooks, Sony Readers, iPads, Android tablets, and many smartphones.  Audiofiles  can also be transferred to iPods and MP3 players.

Up to 10 books may be checked out to your account at a time.  The lending period is 14 days.  You don’t need to worry about returning the books; they automatically become inactive after 14 days, returning to the collection so that someone else may borrow them.  If you want to return a book early, however, you can do so.  If you have borrowed a Kindle book, sign into your Amazon account and go to Manage My Kindle and find the ebook in the My Library list. Click on the Return this book option under the Actions menu.  To return a book from your Nook,  open Adobe Digital Editions on the computer where you downloaded the eBook. Click on the Library View. Titles you have downloaded appear on the right. Click on the small triangle in the upper left corner of the title. Select Return Borrowed Item on the list of options. A dialogue box will pop up. Click Return. The eBook will disappear from your bookshelf in Adobe Digital Editions. The next time you log into Overdrive, the eBook will be checked in, and your account will be updated. If you don’t return the book early, it will expire on its due date.

We have prepared step-by-step instructions for iPadsKindles, and Nooks.  For your Kindle, you can also consult Amazon’s Public Library Books for Kindle page.
