Using the computers

The library is equipped with 19 public access computers (PCs).  Most of the computers (16) are located on the first floor in the Tech-Etch Technology Room.  There is also 1 express computer on the first floor behind the reference desk in the Reference Reading Room and 2 additional computers on the first floor in the Youth Services department

A library card is required for access.

You can only use your library card to log onto one computer at a time.  Three log-ins a day are permitted.  The maximum time allotted per day is 90-minutes.  If all of the computers are busy, there is a sign-up station in the Tech-Etch Technology Room that will allow you to put your name on a waiting list.

For those without library cards or who have used up their allotted time,  60-minute visitor passes are available for $1.00.  Passes are available at the self service machine next to the Reference Desk.  The librarians at the Reference Desk can also print passes for you.  A pass is good for use any time on the day of purchase.  There is no limit on the number of passes you can buy.

All of the computers have internet access.  They operate using Windows 7 and are equipped with Adobe Reader and Microsoft Office 2010, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.  We subscribe to several research databases, notably American Ancestors and Ancestry.com Library Edition, which are available only at the Library.  These resources can be accessed from the computers in the Tech-Etch Technology Room.

Headphones are available at the Reference Desk.

Our computers automatically wipe out any browsing history, passwords, forms, etc. after each session.  We advise you to always save your work to a flash drive.

Printing

With the exception of the express computer, all of the public computers provide black and white printing for $.10 a page. Pre-payment is required.  Money can be added to your library card account using the self service machine next to the Reference Desk.  The librarians in the Children’s Room and at the reference desk can also assist you in adding money to your account.

All of the public computers use the printer located behind the reference desk in the main reading room.

There are three black and white photocopiers for public use in the library:

  • in the main lobby behind the stairwell on the right (opposite the elevator)
  • on the first floor in the Children’s Room (to the right of the doorway, opposite the fish tank)
  • on the second floor in the History Room

Photocopies are $.10 and all of the photocopiers accept coins and dollar bills.
If a copier has run out of paper, jammed, or you need assistance, please contact the reference desk on the first floor.

Microform readers

Microfilm documents are stored on the first floor in the Tech-Etch Technology Room. One reader is located on the second floor in the History Room.  There are three other readers in the Tech-Etch Technology Room adjacent to the public computers.  Black and white printing is available for $.10 a page.  If you need assistance using microforms, please ask for help at the Reference Desk.

Wireless access

Wireless internet service is available for free.  No user name or password is required to connect wireless-enabled devices to our public network.  However, if you wish to print any documents, you will have to log onto one of the public computers.  There are electrical outlets under the tables in the Reference Reading Room as well as in the study carrels in the non-fiction stacks on the library’s  first floor.
